Christy Thomas

Christy is the Founder of Keep Calm Mother On

Christy grew up in Michigan but currently is a nomadic military family moving around as the Navy needs. She is trained in elementary education, personal training, meditation, life coaching, and positive discipline. Christy is married to her college sweetheart and raising three great kids. She finds her daily strength by running, being curious, and taking deep breaths.

 

Share a bit about your Boss Mom journey:

2015 held heartbreak and grief for Christy. I always wanted to be an engaged mom who really enjoyed making memories with my kids. But, then I had a surprise pregnancy and miscarriage during my husband’s deployment. I was now grieving and had to carry on life with three kids. It felt like all the joy I had felt was gone.

I broke down to a friend over the phone when my husband said “You never seem happy anymore.” She reminded me that I was the right mom for this moment and that I wasn’t alone. That allowed me to start taking tiny daily actions– self-care and connection with my family to find joy again. In 2016 Christy and another mom partnered together to send text messages to other moms to help them remember to pause, play and smile at their kids. If the dentist can remind me of teeth cleanings then my phone can remind me to be an intentional parent too. In 2018 Christy started the internally listened to podcast Keep Calm Mother On. She loves building community and moms realize that motherhood is too serious to be serious all the time. In 2021, the original text messages closed down to build a bigger community called Finish the Book where Christy uses her education and life coaching background to offer a slow reading coaching 3-month experience. Each session deep dives into one amazing parenting or personal growth book to really help each mom discover they are exactly the right mom for their kids.

 

What makes you excited about becoming a Boss Mom Spotlight?

Networking, Helping Other Moms Feel Normal because Motherhood is hard for everyone.

 

One piece of advice for moms who are starting a business

Motherhood is too serious to be so serious all the time. Make sure that you give yourself permission to let your hair down and enjoy your kids. Raising a business and a baby are both extreme acts of optimism.

I want to live in a world where…

I want to live in a world where moms smile more than they groan. Where moms don’t feel alone in motherhood and that asking for help is a sign of strength and bravery.

 

This is what I know to be true…

This is what I know to be true “play” in all its forms is the glue of the parent-child connection. It’s a valuable task and a daily need.

 

One thing you can’t live without…

My running shoes & headphones for an audiobook.– I need to move my body at least a mile a day. It helps me feel at home in myself no matter where the Navy moves our family.

 

What is the big milestone that you are hitting that you are celebrating?

I’m about to hit 80,000 listens on my Keep Calm Mother On podcast & reopen the doors to Finish the Book.
