How to Get Things Done When You Have No Time
If you’re anything like me, it feels like the days are getting shorter, especially when the summer rolls around. I swear, it’s like someone hits the “speed up” button, and suddenly, I’ve got kids at home, laundry piling up, and a business to run. And let’s not even mention August—it’s the ultimate scramble as we all try to get organized before the kids head back to school. Anyone else feel like they have no time?
But here’s the thing. The reality is that whether you have kids or not, or whether it’s summer or not, there are times in our lives when we just don’t have time. Period. And yet, the to-do list doesn’t shrink to match our available hours, right? Nope. It grows like some out-of-control monster that thrives on your anxiety.
So, what do we do when there are not enough hours in the day, but we still have things we want to accomplish? How do we get things done when we have no time?
Let’s dive in, Boss Mom style, with a little bit of tough love and a whole lot of nurturing.
1. Know Your True Goal—Like, Really Know It
Alright, ladies, if there’s one thing you take away from this post, let it be this: You need to know what you’re trying to achieve right now.
I get it. We all have multiple goals. We want more revenue, more followers, more visibility, more coffee (okay, maybe that last one is just me). But the reality is you can’t effectively pursue all of those things at once without driving yourself crazy.
Every week, ask yourself: What’s my #1 priority right now? Are you focused on making money? Growing your email list? Building brand authority? Choose ONE. Write it down somewhere you can see it. Let that goal be your north star for the week.
Here’s why this is so important: If you’re trying to juggle too many things, you end up feeling overwhelmed and stuck. But when you get clear on your main goal, it becomes a filter for everything on your to-do list.
2. The Overwhelm Is Real (But Here’s How to Beat It)
Let’s talk about that dreaded overwhelm. You know the feeling—looking at your to-do list, getting so overwhelmed that you just freeze. Suddenly, you’re scrolling Facebook or reorganizing your pantry (again) because everything on your list feels like a priority, so you don’t know where to start.
Here’s a little truth bomb: When everything feels equally important, nothing is actually important.
You’ve got to start ruthlessly prioritizing. And I know that can feel harsh, but trust me, it’s going to change everything.
Every Sunday (or whatever day works for you), sit down for 10 minutes with your list. Ask yourself:
- What’s going to get me closer to my main goal this week?
- Which tasks have the highest impact with the least amount of effort?
Spoiler alert: It’s usually not rewriting your to-do list in a prettier notebook or redoing your logo for the 5th time. 😉 Focus on what actually moves the needle.
3. Set SMART Goals (Even If They Sound Super Corporate)
Okay, I know the idea of “SMART goals” sounds super corporate, and I resisted using this term for years. But you know what? It actually works. So, here’s a quick breakdown:
- Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve?
- Measurable: How will you know you’ve succeeded? (Put a number on it!)
- Attainable: Be realistic with the time and resources you have.
- Relevant: Does this actually matter to your main goal?
- Time-bound: Set a deadline.
Let’s say your goal is to “grow your email list.” That’s too vague. A SMART goal would be: “Add 100 new subscribers by the end of the month by promoting my new lead magnet on Instagram.”
4. Performance Goals: Your Daily Action Plan
Now that you’ve set your weekly goal, let’s talk about breaking it down into bite-sized chunks. These are your performance goals—the small, daily actions that push you toward your bigger outcome.
For example:
- Send 5 pitch emails today.
- Record one podcast episode.
- Write two blog posts this week.
These little daily wins add up, and they’re what really move the needle. But here’s a pro tip: Set performance limits, too. If you tend to go down rabbit holes (I see you, Pinterest lovers), limit how much time you spend on those activities. Maybe you’re only allowed to help two non-ideal clients per week, maxing out at one hour total. Boundaries, my friends. Boundaries.
5. Embrace the Chaos (Because It’s Not Going Away)
Here’s the thing we need to acknowledge as moms and entrepreneurs: Life is messy. Kids get sick, deadlines get missed, motivation wanes, and some days you just want to sit on the couch and binge-watch Netflix.
That’s okay. Seriously. Give yourself some grace. But also, be real with yourself. If you only have 5 hours to work this week, be strategic. Don’t set yourself up for failure by planning to finish a huge project that requires 20 hours. Break things down. What’s the one thing you can do in those 5 hours to get closer to your goal?
And remember, sometimes good enough is good enough. Not everything has to be perfect. Just take action.
6. Stop Consuming, Start Doing
I love podcasts, blogs, courses—heck, I create this stuff for you! But consuming content doesn’t build your business. Doing does.
Once you’ve got your goals and performance plan set, stop scrolling, stop listening, and start taking action.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of “just one more podcast” or “just one more webinar.” But if you’re using all your precious time learning instead of implementing, then you’re not really moving forward.
