Sales skills for moms who care about people

We’re diving into a topic that I hear about all the time from so many women in our community: selling. Specifically, how to be good at selling without feeling like you’re constantly promoting or pushing your business in an uncomfortable way.

If you’re someone who feels bad asking people to pay you or you feel weird promoting your services, you are not alone. It’s a super common feeling, especially for women who just want to be helpful and make an impact. But here’s the thing: if you own a business, you’re a salesperson. Yep, you heard me right! You’re the number one salesperson for your business, and learning how to be good at selling is absolutely essential if you want your business to grow and thrive.

Can You Support and Promote at the Same Time?

Here’s the big question I want to tackle today: Can you support people and promote your business at the same time? The short answer is: YES. In fact, to be good at selling, you have to embrace the idea that support and promotion go hand in hand.

A lot of us struggle with selling because we’ve convinced ourselves that if we’re selling something, we’re not being supportive or helpful. But let me tell you, that’s just not true. You can absolutely offer value, support, and build authentic connections while promoting your business.

Think about it like this: Every successful business is built on relationships. Whether you’re supporting someone by giving them advice, sharing helpful resources, or providing a product or service, it’s all part of the bigger picture. And to make that picture complete, you need to get comfortable with selling.

Why Being Good at Selling Matters

If you want to be good at selling, you have to first realize that selling is not a bad thing. Selling is about exchanging value. People give you money, and in return, you give them something valuable—whether it’s your expertise, a service, or a product.

But here’s the deal: a lot of women, especially in the Boss Mom community, feel like they shouldn’t charge for their time or services because they just want to be helpful. They feel guilty for charging money or for promoting their business. But remember, if you want to run a successful business, people need to buy from you. That’s just how it works.

So, how do we get over that feeling of guilt? How do we be good at selling in a way that feels authentic and aligned with who we are? Let’s dive into some tips.

How to Be Good at Selling: Practical Tips

  1. Understand the Value You Provide
To be good at selling, you need to recognize the value you bring to the table. You aren’t just providing a service or product—you’re offering a solution to a problem. Whether it’s making someone’s life easier, saving them time, or helping them achieve their goals, your work has real value. When you fully understand that, it becomes easier to confidently ask for money in exchange for that value.
  2. Embrace the Sales Mindset
One of the keys to learning how to be good at selling is embracing the mindset that sales are simply part of the process. You’re not “pushing” something on people; you’re offering them something that can genuinely help them. Shift your mindset from “I don’t want to bother people” to “I want to help people with what I offer.”
  3. Create Buzz Around Your Offerings
Here’s a little strategy I love teaching: create buzz around your business by engaging your audience in a way that’s both supportive and promotional. For example, before launching a new product or service, I recommend spending 6 weeks building up to the launch with 7–10 touchpoints. Get your community involved by asking for their input and feedback—ask them what they’d like to see, what problems they’re facing, or even what color they think your new branding should be. This not only helps you refine your offerings but also makes your audience feel invested. And guess what? They’ll be more likely to buy when it’s time to sell!
  4. Ask for Support AND Promote Your Business
Learning how to be good at selling also means learning how to ask for support while promoting your business. You can ask for feedback, ideas, and advice while making sure people know about your business and what you offer. The key is to be authentic—don’t just ask for help as a sneaky way to promote yourself. Be genuine, take their feedback to heart, and yes, let them know about your services or products at the same time.
  5. Own Your Expertise and Your Business
At the end of the day, the best way to be good at selling is to own the fact that you’re running a business. Be proud of it! If you have something valuable to offer, you should want to tell people about it. Some people will be interested, some won’t—and that’s okay! But if you never promote yourself, people won’t even know you exist.
  6. Practice Makes Perfect
Like anything, the more you practice selling, the better you’ll get at it. I wasn’t always comfortable selling either. Early in my career, I found it really hard. But over the years, I’ve taken sales training, worked with mentors, and practiced a lot. If selling feels hard for you right now, just know that it’s a skill you can learn. And once you master it, it becomes so much easier to confidently promote your business.

How to Be Good at Selling Without Feeling “Salesy”

The fear of feeling “salesy” is one of the biggest reasons people shy away from selling. But here’s the thing: if you’re offering something valuable and you genuinely believe it can help people, you shouldn’t feel bad about promoting it.

The key to how to be good at selling without feeling pushy is to focus on building relationships. Connect with people, listen to their needs, and offer solutions that make sense for them. The more you build trust and offer value, the more people will naturally want to buy from you.

Selling Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

If selling makes you uncomfortable, remember that it’s just a conversation. You’re having a conversation about how you can help someone solve a problem, reach a goal, or make their life easier. When you look at it that way, it becomes a lot less intimidating.

So, next time you’re feeling unsure about promoting your business, remind yourself that selling is about connection, value, and support. And that’s something we can all feel good about.
