Boss Mom of the Week: Samantha Munoz

Samantha Munoz is a mother, wife, engineer, bibliophile and avid coffee drinker. She is also the expert kid’s lit curator at Addison Reads and author of The Intentional Bookshelf. Sam writes children’s book reviews to guide parents as they search for the perfect books for their little ones and helps moms and dads build a library with a purpose. Once a seriously overwhelmed and stressed out parent herself, Sam turns to children’s literature for the answers to all of her parenting dilemmas. She lives in sunny San Diego, California but loves when it rains because it gives her an excuse to stay inside and read with her daughter!

Tell us a little bit about your family and your Boss Mom journey.

My husband and I were high school sweethearts <3. He joined the Marine Corps as I finished up high school and later went on to college so we had a long distance relationship for several years. After graduating with my engineering degree we FINALLY had the opportunity to live together (though we had been married and living apart for several years prior). In that first year really being together we were sent to Japan where we had my daughter, Addison. It was in Japan, away from my element, that I fell in love with entrepreneurship. I was never meant to be a stay at home mom and I found myself trapped by that title. Since then, I have learned more about business and how to grow something truly incredible from the ground up – with my family by my side.

What are some of your favorite go to meals when time is tight and dinner MUST get on the table?

I’m solo parenting at the moment so dinner is almost always a tight and stressful situation. Every week I buy a rotisserie chicken, shred it up and have that available to me to use for any meal I see fit for us throughout the week (throw it on a salad or mix it with some buffalo sauce to make a wrap). It’s easy!

Where do you go for inspiration?

I typically grab my cup of coffee and get some fresh air in whatever capacity that means. I also like to be in a place with lots of natural light – it always opens my eyes and gives me clarity.

What are you currently reading or listening to (podcasts, books, blogs etc)?

I’ve been listening to the TED Radio Hour a ton. It’s non-business related things that make me think critically about the world. It’s nice to get out of the biz realm from time to time, and I’ve seen it trickle into my business mindset and what I talk about anyway. Funny how that happens. I’ve also been reading lots of children’s books and learning great lessons from those too, but of course.

What is one piece of business advice that you’d give to a mom just starting out?

Find a community that gets you. Stop reading everything everyone tells you on the internet about starting a business and instead find one person you trust and respect, find their community and be an active member. Give more than you take and eventually, you will see the fruit of your labor.
In one word, sum up your life as a Boss Mom.

People. It’s all about the people.

What are three core values of your business and how do those values relate to your motherhood?

  1. A bookshelf is not just a bookshelf – it is a reflection of who we are and who we want to be.
  2. You do not have to parent empty handed.
  3. Children’s literature is really freaking insightful and finding the right books to read with your kids leads to stress-free parenting.
