Share a bit about your Boss Mom journey:

I was a depressed and angry sixteen-year-old girl with low self-esteem when I fell in love with a man 5 years older. It seems as though my wishes were answered…I finally found the love I craved.

I knew I didn’t want to be pregnant, so I went to the local planned parenthood for birth control. Everything about this process terrified me. The environment was cold and unwelcoming.  I was so afraid I would run into someone I knew, and they would judge me, or worse yet, tell my mom. I quietly snuck out twice.

On my third visit, I told myself that no matter how scared I was, I was going to stay. The idea of being a mom terrified me even more. My whole body shook as I lay there, with my legs up in stirrups, waiting for my turn to be seen.

I remember the precise moment a male doctor walked up to me, with my chart in hand, slapped my behind and said, “Get dressed. You don’t need birth control, you’re pregnant.” That day was one of the biggest defining moments in my life.

Through-out my pregnancy and childbirth, I felt constantly judged and mistreated by the medical community who were there to help me. During a particularly painful contraction, I yelled and screamed both from the pain, and from the sheer terror of what was happening. A nurse looked sternly at me and said, “You’re about to have a baby. Stop acting like one. You got yourself in this mess. Deal with it.”

The moment I looked into my son’s eyes, I knew it was up to me to stop the cycle of poverty and self-hatred so I can give this little being everything he needs and deserves.

I started reading every self-help book I could put my hands on, and this was the beginning of my very long healing journey.

I also got my GED and enrolled in college. I knew I wanted to be a resource for other teen girls.

At 23 years old, I earned my Master of Science in Nursing and became a Nurse Practitioner. After 9 years working in adolescent health, I opened up my first clinic for teens, Teen Choice Medical Center. Five years later, I opened up a satellite clinic.

For six years, I lived out my dreams of providing teens a safe place to learn about their physical and mental health.

Although I loved having my clinics, I decided to close them down six years into practice. I started noticing an alarming trend where teens would say things such as, “If I didn’t have anxiety/depression/ADHD, I could do XYZ.” or “I hate taking pills, but I can’t function without them.” I went into medicine to help, but instead, I felt as if I was giving them a prison sentence and a crutch that prevented them from growing and becoming their best self.

This was the same time I discovered and fell in love with holistic health care and alternative healing practices.

It’s been 11 years since I’ve become a Mindset Mentor and Holistic Healer with an emphasis on helping teen girls and women heal from the pain of their past and create a deep sense of self-love and confidence in who they are.

Although my business morphed a few times, my passion for helping teens is as strong today as when I first started the journey 26 years ago. I remember being a scared young girl who devoured every self-help book hoping to discover a way out of pain. Today, I write self-help books for her, and every other teen girl out there who is looking for guidance to develop their self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-love.

One piece of advice for moms who are starting a business

Make sure to spend quality time with your children and show them that they are your priority. Along with that, make sure to spend quality time to take care of YOU.

Where do you go for inspiration?

Nature is my inspiration. When I need to clear my head or re-energize myself, I head to the beach, the mountains, or a nature hike to immerse in the beauty and magic in front of me. This clears my head and allows me to reconnect to what’s important to me.
