Share a bit about your Boss Mom journey:
I started my business when my son was 3 years old. There is never enough time to do everything and the learning curve for sales and marketing was tough. Plus there is the whole – what should I focus on now issue, because it seemed like I should be blogging, vlogging, tik tokking, snapchatting, instgramming and everything else. But I found that none of this really moved the needle for me. What helped me, won’t necessarily work for everyone, but I think you just have to look and see what makes sense for your audience. I learned how to do webinars and build up partnerships that changed my business model for the better. I had to learn what I liked to do and what I was good at. This was hard. And to top it off I wanted everything done right away. This put undue pressure on myself, made my life more stressful, I would come home late from working, not really see my child that much. Which was ironic, because the reason I wanted to start a business, so I thought, was to spend more time with my son, yet now I had less time for him than ever. I realized that I wanted to have an impact on nurses and their lives and to help them impact healthcare. That was the driving force and the consequence of not managing this dream was losing time with my son. I had to make adjustments. Especially because I’m a single mom and I didn’t want my son growing up in day care and barely seeing me at night. I instituted a long term plan and broke the plan down into pieces so I only had a couple things to accomplish a day. While it dragged out the launch of my business tremendously, keeping my sanity and my stress under control were more important!
What makes you excited about becoming a Boss Mom of the Week?
This is a huge honor! I love inspiring women and moms to action. No matter how much we give to others and help them with their lives, it’s not enough unless we are able to pursue our own dreams. And I think that’s what life is about, creating an impact on the world with our actions. It’s great to help others with their dreams, but your true purpose is to look at your own gifts and share them with the world.
One piece of advice for moms who are starting a business
Take it easy on yourself and know that it will take time. A business is like a baby in many ways, it needs love and attention every day and not just once in a while. But also you can ask for help and schedule only a few key things a day to get down. You will make more progress doing 1 or 2 things a day than pretending you are going to get 10 major tasks done in between being a mom and everything else.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I love to watch the waves come in from the ocean and just soak in the breeze
What are you currently reading or listening to (podcasts, books, blogs etc)?
I read as many books as I can get my hands on. Right now I’m reading about Phil Knight from Nike
I want to live in a world where…
…nurses are running the healthcare system!
One thing you can’t live without…
…traveling. It’s my thing. I love traveling the world and having unexpected experiences.
What is the big milestone that you are hitting that you are celebrating?
